But I’m Not Skilled: How You Can Help With Any Show (Even if You’re Not Artsy)

Have you ever sat in the audience of your child’s production, watched the lights dim, and felt a stir in your heart to be a part of the magic—only to immediately shut the thought down? Maybe you told yourself, "I can't sing a note," or "I don't have a creative bone in my body." Many people believe that theater is reserved only for those with a flair for the dramatic or a paintbrush in their hand.

The truth is, great theater doesn’t happen by accident, and it certainly doesn't happen with only actors and directors. Behind every story that moves an audience, there is a massive, dedicated team of people working to make it possible. At DGPA, we believe you were made for more than just a seat in the audience; you were made to be part of a community that brings stories of faith to life.

If you have a willing heart and a few hours to spare, there is a place for you here. You don't need a resume filled with stage credits to make an eternal impact. Whether you are a spreadsheet wizard, a handyman, or simply someone who loves to make people feel welcome, your unique non-artsy skills are exactly what we need to point others toward Him.

Finding Community Off the Stage

When you volunteer with DGPA, your time and talents become part of something eternal. It is about so much more than just showing up to complete a task; it is about finding a home among a community of like-minded believers. For many of our volunteers, the most rewarding part of the experience isn't the final curtain call—it's the fellowship found in the scene shop, the costume room, or the lobby.

In a world that can often feel isolating, serving behind the scenes offers a rare chance to belong to a Christ-centered community. You will find yourself working alongside people who share your values and your desire to see the Gospel shared through quality theater. As you help impact the audience, you’ll likely find that you are being impacted yourself, growing in your own faith as you serve.

We often hear from volunteers that they were nervous to join because they didn't know anyone, but those nerves quickly fade. Whether you're helping for a full season or just a few hours on a show weekend, you are treated as a vital part of the family. You’ll discover that using what God gave you—even if it feels ordinar"—creates extraordinary bonds with those serving beside you.

Why All Hands are Necessary and Good

The Bible teaches us that the Body of Christ is made up of many parts, and every single one is indispensable. In 1 Corinthians 12:14-18, we are reminded that "the body is not one member, but many." Just as the eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you," a lead actor cannot say to the person collecting tickets, "I have no need of you." Every role, no matter how hidden, is a contribution to the whole.

At DGPA, we view every volunteer role as an act of worship. When you are child wrangling backstage or organizing props, you are creating the space for a story of faith to reach someone's soul. Scripture tells us in Colossians 3:23, "And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;" This means that painting a flat or steaming a costume is just as much a performance of praise as the person singing the solo. By bringing your specific gifts to the table, you are honoring the way God uniquely wired you to serve His kingdom.

Where You Can Volunteer

If you're wondering exactly where you might fit, take a look at the many needs we have for every production. We provide training for every role, so don't worry if you've never done it before!

  • Front of House & Hospitality: Are you a people person? We need ushers, greeters, and folks to help with baking or concessions to make our guests feel at home from the moment they walk in.

  • Technical & Stage Crew: If you like working with your hands or are tech-savvy, you can help with set building, painting, or even operating the lights and sound.

  • Costumes, Hair, & Makeup: You don't have to be a fashion designer! We need people for laundry, steaming, thrifting for pieces, and simple sewing to keep our performers looking their best.

  • Administrative & Organization: If you love spreadsheets, organizing things, or fundraising, your office skills are a godsend for our behind-the-scenes operations.

  • Photography & Videography: Help us capture the stories of faith by using your lens to document rehearsals and performances.

  • Child Wrangling & Security: Our highest priority is the safety of our performers. We need responsible adults to help manage the energy backstage and ensure a secure environment for all.

  • Prayer Warriors: Perhaps the most vital role of all—we are always looking for people dedicated to praying for our cast, crew, and the hearts of the audience.

And there’s so much more. Check out our full list of volunteer needs on our volunteer page.

A Place Where You Can Belong

At the end of the day, Deo Gloria Performing Arts isn't just about the applause; it's about letting your talent—no matter what it is—serve something greater. You don't have to choose between your faith and your interest in the arts; here, they go hand in hand. We invite you to step out of the audience and into the heart of our community.

Whether you can give forty hours or four, your contribution matters to us. We will walk you through any necessary steps, like background checks for youth safety, to make the process as simple as possible. We want you to leave every show feeling encouraged and strengthened, knowing you played a part in sharing God’s story.

There is a place for you here, and a community of like-minded believers waiting to welcome you. Come grow your craft, find your purpose, and let’s bring stories of faith to life together.
